A Man With Some Tiny Plans

A Man With Some Tiny Plans

So far all of my work on the project had been very speculative and I was feeling the need to focus my efforts, to do this I needed to decide what to build. In a previous post I outlined some of the tiny house plans I had found for purchase. Deciding the house I wanted to live in was not an easy process. This isn’t a space I will be spending just a day or two in, this will be my home for years. Going tiny relies on good design, in order to make the most out of the available space and create something pleasurable to live in.

After much deliberation I decided to go with the Ynez from the Oregon Cottage Company. Like many tiny houses, it is at the legal maximum for width and height restrictions without needing wide load permits. This means it shouldn’t be too hard to move, even off of the island if we decide to change location. I really liked the look of the house inside and out, with the spacious loft being a feature which really appealed to me. The Ynez’s design seemed very well thought out as well as aesthetically pleasing, so it ticked a lot of boxes. I also have some ideas for how to take the plans and customise them, so while I do not feel ready to design a full house, I will use these plans to build something safe and solid which I can then put my own stamp on.

Before I purchased the plans I spoke on the phone with Todd, who designed the house, about some possible alterations to the design I was considering. Todd was really friendly, patient and helpful, and help me firm up my decision to build the Ynez.

Speaking with him made me realise that he was the first person from the tiny house community that I had actually had a conversation with. I talk to lots of people about what I am planning on doing and why, but this is the first person I have spoken to that has actually done it. That’s something I need to change.

With my mind made up I purchased the plans and Todd sent me both digital and paper copies. This project has some legs!

That looks a cosy little home - for one! Not sure about two people fitting in. The loft is a really good idea. Because I en joy all my bits and pieces round me I find it hard to take in the whole concept of "living tiny" but I,m working at it. love, Grandma'
